Photography and science have a symbiotic relationship; they always have. | It was in the context of science that photography was first announced to the public by François Arago in 1839. ¶ Photography soon acquired the rhetoric of observation and objectivity that was beloved by scientists in the mid-nineteenth century. | However, it was these close ties to science that hindered its bid to claim fine-art status. ¶ Photography’s connection with science has also been utilized by artists over the decades, | artists who played with the concepts of objectivity, truth, documentary, and surveying. ¶ The author discusses the unique place photography occupies in the art of science and the science of art, | exploring moments where the two appear to converge and diverge. ¶ Rather than conducting a comprehensive survey, the paper will dip into various points in history, | examining the debates from multiple historical perspectives. ¶ This allows consideration of the ‘art-science’ paradigm as it ha...
